Project Overview
Before construction begins, contractors need to know exactly what lies underground. One utility strike can damage critical infrastructure, create serious safety hazards, and bring a project to a halt.
Bully Industrial recently completed a hydro excavation project in northern Alabama for a Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) contractor that needed to verify 10 potential utility conflicts.
Using non-destructive hydro excavation, our four-person crew safely exposed existing underground utilities, verified elevations, documented conditions, and restored the site—all in one day, with zero utility strikes and zero safety incidents.
The Challenge: 10 Utility Conflicts, Zero Room for Error
The engineering team needed precise field verification before construction could move forward. Existing power and underground utility lines had to be safely exposed and measured to determine the top and bottom elevations of an existing sanitary sewer main.
The work area added another layer of complexity, with active traffic, overhead obstructions, congested conditions, and a tight construction schedule.
Traditional mechanical excavation would have increased the risk of damaging buried infrastructure. The contractor needed a safer, more precise way to locate and document the utilities without disrupting the project.
The Solution: Precision Hydro Excavation
Bully Industrial deployed a two-person crew with a hydro excavation unit, measuring equipment, and mobile documentation technology.
Using pressurized water and vacuum excavation, the crew carefully removed soil around existing utilities without damaging buried infrastructure. Each utility was then exposed, measured, verified, and documented for the engineering team before the excavation was safely backfilled.
Throughout the project, Bully coordinated closely with the SUE contractor to maintain accurate documentation while minimizing disruption to ongoing construction.
Services Provided:
- Hydro excavation
- Utility daylighting
- Underground utility verification
- Utility elevation measurements and documentation
- Vacuum excavation
- Backfill and site restoration
Why Hydro Excavation?
Hydro excavation provides a safer, more precise alternative to mechanical digging around existing underground utilities. Pressurized water loosens the soil while a vacuum system removes the material, allowing crews to expose buried infrastructure without direct contact.
For this project, hydro excavation helped:
- Prevent utility strikes
- Protect existing infrastructure
- Reduce risk to workers and the public
- Provide accurate utility elevations
- Support engineering documentation
- Avoid costly delays
- Keep construction on schedule
Safety at Every Step
Working around existing utilities, traffic, and overhead hazards required careful planning. Bully implemented multiple safety measures, including:
- Job Safety Analysis (JSA)
- Pre- and post-job site walks
- Traffic control and coned work zones
- Low-pressure water excavation techniques
- Required PPE
- Dedicated monitoring of equipment clearances and surrounding conditions
The result: zero utility strikes and zero safety incidents.
Project Results
Bully Industrial completed all 10 utility verifications in a single day, giving the engineering team the information needed to move forward safely and efficiently.
| Project Metric | Result |
| Project Duration | 1 Day |
| Crew Members | 2 |
| Utility Conflicts Verified | 10 |
| Material Excavated | 12 Cubic Yards |
| Utility Documentation | Completed |
| Utility Strikes | 0 |
| Safety Incidents | 0 |
By identifying underground utility conflicts before construction progressed, Bully helped protect existing infrastructure, reduce project risk, and prevent costly delays.
